About Georgios Fotopoulos, MD, PhD, FSMB
Georgios Fotopoulos, MD, PhD, FSMB, is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He specializes in thoracic oncology, focusing on cancers of the lung and chest, and experimental cancer therapies at Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center.
He earned his medical degree from Athens Medical School in 2004. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Evangelismos General Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Ioannina in 2015. He received certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in 2012 and board certification from the European Society for Medical Oncology in 2014.
Dr. Fotopoulos began his academic career as an instructor at the Athens Medical School, where his work focused on lung, breast, and neuroendocrine tumors. In 2017, he moved to Texas to complete a fellowship in advanced oncology drug development at Mays Cancer Center. There, he contributed to early-phase clinical trials studying targeted and novel cancer therapies. From 2019 to 2025, he served as a national leader in lung and urogenital cancers at the largest cancer institution in Cyprus before returning to the United States.
He holds a doctorate examining the role of the androgen receptor in breast cancer and has authored 19 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. He also translated and edited the Greek edition of the MD Anderson Manual of Oncology. Dr. Fotopoulos is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the European Society for Medical Oncology, the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology, the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group and the National Cancer Institute.
His clinical and research focus is advancing care for patients with thoracic cancers and expanding access to innovative treatments through early-phase clinical trials.
